Motivation vs Discipline

Hello and welcome back. Today we are going to talk a bit about discipline and motivation and why both are good. Yet how you can’t rely solely on motivation.

Motivation

Everyone knows how amazing it feels to start something when the motivation is there. And how much we can do in a short time with motivation.
With motivation we often start new things and in the beginning we rely solely on motivation. However, if we don’t see result right away we lose motivation and if we then don’t have discipline we end up quitting whatever we started.

I have some challenges regarding this blog. I love writing to you guys and it gives me so much joy everytime I post. But honestly, I often don’t know what I am going to write about. And when I am not 100% well or have my kid home with me, it’s easy to just skip writing a post and tell myself that it’s not that important.
This is simply because I have relied to much on motivation instead of discipline.

Motivation are a good thing. We often need motivation to begin something new. But we can’t solely rely on motivation to keep going and growing. We need to have discipline.

Discipline

There are different kinds of discipline, but we are going to talk about self-discipline.

Self-discipline is the ability to make yourself do things even when you don’t want to.
The lack of self-discipline is so normal that we almost joke about it. We mostly lack self-discipline when it comes to food, money and exercise.

I myself has the lowest self-discipline when it comes to money. And that is something I am working on. I also lack self-discipline when it comes to energydrinks and foodrelated things. I have some self-discipline when it comes to this blog. Yet I still have some work to do to be where I want to be and be able to grow this blog.

When we look into people who have achieved great things we often find that on the top 5 things they did was having excellent self-discipline.

Motivation, Self-Discipline and Fibromyalgia

For us that have chronic illnesses it’s challenging to start something new even if we have the motivation. Where others have few things to consider before starting something (depending on how big the thing is), we have many things to consider before we start anything. Like, how is will it affect our health. Is there something else we need to let go of. Do we need to change our schedule completely or can we just put in our schedule as it is now. Do we need to plan for downtime after doing this. Is this something we can do in the long run or something we only can do like a couple of times a year. Will this take away time we want to use on other things.

After we have answered these questions and decided that this is something we want to do. Then we can actually use our motivation to start. And then we need to work on being self-disciplined even when we are having flare-days.

I know that for those weeks I don’t post it’s usually because I either am sick/exhausted or have my kid at home with me. I know that I work best on this blog when I am sitting at the local library or at our local cafe. At home there is so much distractions that I normally end up not posting anything.

Summary

Motivation is amazing to actually start something. But we need self-discipline to keep going. And for us with chronic illnesses both motivation and self-discipline is often more challenging.
